NYSC Standard Roadmap, Guidelines and Procedures
The journey to a successful NYSC,
National Youth Service Corp programme begins as soon as a student finishes all
clearance activities in his/her institution of choice. This documentation would
be made as brief as possible as it assumes the reader to have background
information on what the NYSC programme is all about, the history of the NYSC
and other basic background knowledge. So it would focus on just the roadmap
from start to finish of the NYSC programme, as a firsthand information since
the author is a corp member himself, serving his fatherland as at the time of
publishing this.
Clearance for NYSC
Once a student completes studies,
what follows is clearance. There are about four sets of clearances within the
Nigerian educational setting.
The first set of clearance involves finance – all kinds of finance
related activities affiliated with the student in Nigerian Tertiary educational
institutions such as Tuition, dues and damages. The finance officers and bursary
unit of Universities and other tertiary Institutions handle this together with
the student. Once cleared and found not to default/defaulted any financial
activity legitimate to him/her, the student is good to go to the next set of
clearance.
General clearance – the student is issued forms at the Student
Affairs Unit of the university and faculty offices which he must ensure are
signed by appropriate authorities. The student would move from office to office
namely, the bursary, dean of his/her faculty, dean of students, Library, head
of department and himself etc. on
completion of this, the student applies for new student ID card which he would present on
camp. This may take few days or weeks to process.
Third clearance is done once the student sees his name on the
graduation board. He/she then obtains a clearance form from the dean of
students and completes same, then submits.
Final Clearance – As already noted, before a student undergoes the
above he must have seen his/her name among persons enlisted for service. This temporarily
marks the end of his studentship in the institution. He/she is perhaps now a
graduate and may wish to be addressed as such. So please permit me to use
replace “student” with “graduate” henceforth.
The graduate is hence issued a
final clearance form with columns for his names in full, date of graduation,
state being deployed to, place holder for passport in red background etc. he attached a photocopy of his/her ID Card to this and is
off to service.
NYSC Registration
Registration for NYSC programme
is done online at the NYSC registrations portal, portal.nysc.org.ng. For regular
registrations, what is needed is basically white passport photograph, valid
email account, active phone number, correct signature of the candidate and
other bio-data. The portal is open for registration for about one month during
which period prospective corp members must have completed all registrations and
printed their green card details.

Basic NYSC Kits
Corp members are required to report
at NYSC camp with certain conveniences excluding automobiles, motorbikes and
bicycles and/or questionable objects. They are however required to come along
with sets of white shorts, underwear, white polo etc., torchlight, buckets,
plates and cutleries, blankets, pillows and other basic conveniences.
NYSC Rules
There are a number of rules and
general guidelines for the NYSC Programme. Needless writing them all here as
these are well documented on the NYSC Portal and on the call-up later. Please access
the NYSC portal to see full NYSC in-service guidelines and specifications.
Three weeks is designated for
camping at the states of deployment. After this, corp members are to rest for
about two weeks before deployment to place of primary assignment. That is where
the real service to nation begins. The above was just a preamble. A toast to
service and humility . . . . . corper shun!!
