The LifePo4 battery has capacity to power basic low voltage home appliances like some Radio sets, Lighting, Television and sound systems. It may however not support high voltage devices like electric Pressing Irons, Deep Freezers, Dry Cleaning machines, ovens and electric hot plates/cookers etc. except under special constructions by trained technician or engineer.
The battery itself
The LifePo4 battery comes with a specified charger and specific ratings. Pictured below, the battery just like the distributor and charger has two sets of cables attached to one of its ends. One set of cables contain the lead to the distributor, while the other goes to the charger.

The LifePo4 battery itself, wrapped in metallic casing with a blue polythene outer casing is a moderately heavy device and could be carried around – yet not for too long. It may require an extra bag for carriage – especially for mobile businessmen like roadside computer operators who would have need to take it home for charging after the day’s job.
The Charger
The LifePo4 charger is terminated on opposite ends with two sets of black, thick cables – one to the Mains sockets, A.C., and the other end to the battery charging connector.
The Mains connector is terminated with a 3-tooth plug while the battery charging connector cable is round in shape and acts as the male. This is articulated with the female connector of the LifePo4 battery and clamped securely with a round nut/washer.

The Distributor, Charging and Indicators
The LifePo4 battery comes with a power distributor and a charger with specified ratings.
The distributor is terminated on one end with red/black cables and on the other end with connectors for Laptop and Printer respectively. The LifePo4 battery takes about 6 hours to charge to full capacity, and this energy is distributed by the distributor to the gadgets attached.
However, depending on the level of energy inside the battery, two sets of lights serve as indicators – red and green, A red light shows on the distributor once it is low in capacity and soon after this, the device shuts down. The green indicator means the LifePo4 battery is still strong and has enough current to drive devices connected to it.

As good as the LifePo4 battery seems, there are certain don’ts which must be obeyed for longevity and sustained performance of the device. That it’s designed to be strong does not necessarily mean it must be tossed around anyhow.
The LifePo4 battery hates moisture, it also does not tolerate exposure/overexposure to the naked sun or any form of heat. Connecting opposite terminals of the connectors short-circuits the battery and that brings the life of your LifePo4 battery to an end.
Do not also use any other kind of charger to charge it, apart from the specified one. If it is faulty, don’t attempt to repair it except you are a trained technician or engineer capable of handling this.

The LifePo4 battery could be a total replacement for electric power generators depending on the situation. Electric power generators produce a lot of noise pollution, heat and pollution with effluents. Apart from these, they are costly to maintain – at least once a week.
Electric power generators also require constant fueling and refueling. No fuel means, no power and for some that use engine oil mixed with petrol/diesel, this gives more cost. Diesel in this part of the world is costlier than petrol - but whatever fuel is being used, an extra cost is always incurred.

LifePo4 battery on the other hand needs no particular maintenance scheme. It produces no noise, generates no heat, and does not pollute the environment since it produces no effluents. It does not use any kind of organic fuel unlike the gasoline/diesel engines. It is the better choice when small-scale business or personal/home usage (excluding high voltage/density usage) is required. However, it is no total replacement for electric power generators in terms of capacity.
You would always require energy from either the public electric power authority (PHCN in Nigeria) or high capacity electric power plants/generators to charge them. You cannot use the LifePo4 battery for example to power your electric freezer, iron your clothes, power all the lighting in a large household settlement, cook food with the hot plate or boil water with the electric heater.

ReplyDeleteIt's a shame to hear that there are so many power outages that it makes it hard to do business in a reliable way. I hope solutions like the LifePo4 battery will eventually lead to a world in which everyone can become less dependent from unreliable state controlled (and costly) power grids. Also in Europe and the rest of the world.
